Kathmandu: Australia has seen a dramatic drop in international student visa applications following the government's recent crackdown on migration. The Australian Department of Education reported that visa applications in August 2024 were half of what they were during the same period in 2023. The decline is largely due to the Australian government’s new measures, which include higher visa fees and a cap on student enrolments set to take effect in 2025.

From July 2024, the application fee for international student visas was raised from 710 Australian dollars to 1,600 Australian dollars. Additionally, Australia will limit the number of new international student enrolments to 270,000 annually starting next year. These changes have had a significant impact on students from major source countries, including India, Pakistan, the Philippines, and Nepal.

Impact on Nepali Students:

Nepali students, who make up a substantial portion of international students in Australia, are facing severe consequences as a result of these measures. The higher visa costs and limited enrolment slots will make it more difficult for Nepali students to pursue studies in Australia in the future. Many Nepali students have viewed education in Australia as a pathway to permanent residency, and the stricter regulations could significantly reduce the number of Nepali students applying to Australian institutions.

In 2023, Nepali students ranked among the top groups enrolling in Australia’s vocational and higher education programs. However, with the new regulations in place, Nepali student applications are expected to decline sharply, mirroring trends in other affected countries. This is also likely to impact education consultancies and families in Nepal who have long facilitated the student visa process for Australia.

Economic Impact on Australian Universities:

The reduction in student enrolments will not only affect students but also Australia’s higher education sector. Universities Australia, an organization representing Australian universities, has warned that the enrolment cap could result in billions of dollars in economic losses and lead to thousands of job cuts within the education sector.

Australia's stricter visa regulations are part of a larger effort to control migration, but the consequences for international students, particularly from Nepal, are significant. Rising visa costs and enrolment caps will limit opportunities for aspiring Nepali students, while also affecting the broader education sector in Australia. Both Australia’s economy and the dreams of many Nepali students stand to be affected by these changes.
